My Digital Contribution

As I mentioned on the class forum, my online presence is not very strong (but its growing). However, I overlooked my PFE experience working on the Digital Commons at Rhode Island College . I work on the database for the records to the Smolski collection, slide photographs by Chet Smolski converted to digital format and uploaded to the Digital Commons site. I primarily work with the records, but hope to learn more about converting and scanning the slides. I guess I am making a contribution to the world of virtual information after all! There are some terrific photographs of Providence architecture in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as other images if anyone is interested.

  1. When I was a college student, I worked in our Slide Library (people still used slides in the late 90s, seems quaint now) ... Now that I'm a library employee at that very same college, I've had a chance to pitch in with the (arduous) task of scanning many of those slides and inputting them into the database - along with their corresponding Dublin Core records - for our newly christened Visual Resources Library.

We've also been uploading images from the various professors' personal photo collections, as a way of expanding the library's ability to house and disseminate items unique to the college (i.e. keeping the library relevant by providing resources that can't be found via any other resource) ... People can check it out here (I worked on a lot of the Chinese culture images).

  2. Cassie,

That sounds like a very interesting PFE experience! When I was in high school I worked at my local Historical Society. While there one of the things that did was go through all of their old photographs and label them, put them in categories and then get them ready to be preserved. I have always enjoyed looking at old photos and helping find a way to keep them so other people can enjoy them in the years to come.
